Fire, Barbed Wire & Tacks - a first novel by Jeff Hollobaugh Three years of hard work and my novel is done: Fire, Barbed Wire & Tacks. The first thing my track buddies say is, "It's about running, right?" Yes and no. It's about a runner in his last semester of high school. But he's no champion. And there are races in it, but they're not exactly triumphant celebrations of the human spirit, a la "Running Brave." Read more.... |

Jackson's four-year run of hosting the
Midwest Meet of Champions has come to an end, but a pair of record
performances by some of Michigan's best helped the meet go out with a
bang. In the 800m, Tommy Brinn blasted a 1:49.27, taking down Rick Gledhill's state record of 1:49.33 from the 1988 season. Gledhill, from Mt Clemens Chippewa Valley, ran his time at the now-defunct International Prep Invitational in Elmhurst, Illinois--a meet that once was as important as the Nike Outdoor Championships are today. Brinn's splits: 26.6, 27.8 [54.4], 27.5 [1:22.1], 27.2. He split his last 200 in 13.4/13.8. |

Event 5 Girls High Jump
For Ariel Roberts, this meet was a vindication of sorts after she lost the event
at the state finals. After winning the competition at 5-7, she had the bar moved
to a PR-tying 5-10. She cleared with ease, then moved it to 5-11, a height only
two Michigan preps have cleared before. Her tries there were solid, so more may
be coming.

Event 11 Girls 4x800 Meter Relay
For Team Michigan, this one came down to the lean. Down more than 10m on
getting the baton, Cass Tech's Jerisha Tucker stalked the Ohio anchor, and
gradually pulled within striking range. In their dash to the finish, it became
clear that the race would be decided by mere inches. Michigan prevailed by a
slender four hundredths of a second.

300 Meter Hurdles In the 300 hurdles, Christienne Linton came through despite ostensibly being tired from winning the long jump at 18-6.5 and the 100H in 14.42 (slight headwind). She won handily in 42.49, an all-time state record that trumps the old best of 42.70 set by Nikki Bouyer of Lansing Sexton at the Midwest Meet in 1994. Bouyer went on to star at Clemson. |
